how to make play dough. Super easy!

I love using playdoh and modeling clay - and yet I don’t always enjoy paying tons of money for it! Instead of going out to buy brand new play dough this super easy 3 ingredient recipe for homemade playdough will give you and your child an opportunity to create together. This recipe is perfect for one or two students to share, and will last up to two weeks if kept in an airtight container or baggie.

Here’s all the supplies you’ll need...

One Large Mixing Bowl

3-4 Smaller Mixing Bowls

One Stir Spoon

1 Cup All Purpose Flour

½ Cup Salt

½ Cup Lukewarm Water

Directions

In a large mixing bowl, add One Cup of All Purpose Flour. Then Mix in ½ Cup of Salt, and ½ Cup Water. Using a large stir spoon begin to mix the ingredients together - as the dough starts to form, I usually abandon my stir spoon and just use my hands to mix and kneed the dough! It should feel like bread dough, but if it’s too sticky and won’t come off of your fingers add a tablespoon of flour to the mixture until it doesn’t stick to your fingers. Then divide your dough up into 3-4 smaller bowls and add a few drops of food coloring into each one (depending on how many different colors of dough you’d like to create). If the addition of the liquid food coloring makes your dough sticky, just add a pinch of flour at a time until it feels like play dough again.

play dough storage

Storage and safe handling

Keep your different colored balls of play dough in baggies or air tight containers to use for up to two weeks! Avoid putting dough on carpet, or in hair. Dough will harden like a rock when left exposed to the air, so create this playdough on a table or surface that you can wipe off afterwards!

Optional Additives

Spices: Cinnamon, Nutmeg or Turmeric can make your dough smell amazing!

Essential Oils: a few droplets of Peppermint, Chamomile or Lavender will also make your dough smell great - if the liquid makes your dough sticky, just add a bit more flour to even it out!

Glitter or Sequins: Mix in some glitter or gems and jewels to hide inside your dough.

Have fun creating your super easy 3 ingredient play dough! If you decide to use this recipe, go ahead and share your creations with me! Playdough is such a wonderful open ended art material that lends itself to creative play and constructive hand building skills!
